Punjab Police launches operation against illegal lottery, gambling
Punjab Police on Saturday launched a day-long operation across the state against people involved in illegal lottery and gambling. The operation was carried out on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, an official release said. Special Director General of Police (law and order) Arpit Shukla said the operation was conducted across the state in a synchronised manner from 10 am to 3 pm. All the commissioners and senior superintendents of police were asked to depute station house officers of each police station to raid and check people against whom more than two cases of the Gambling Act have been registered in the last five years, he said. As many as 285 police teams, involving 1,500 police personnel, have raided over 500 premises allegedly involved in the illegal lottery and gambling, Shukla said. Air India's Boeing aircraft that was grounded in Magadan in far east Russia landed in Mumbai on Saturday evening. The plane had taken off from Magadan earlier in the day after engineers rectified the oil system defect in one of the engines, according to the airline. On June 6, AI 173 operating from Delhi to San Francisco carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members was diverted to the port city of Magadan in far east Russia following a mid-air glitch in one of the engines of the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. All were stranded in the port city for two days and the replacement aircraft ferried them to San Francisco on June 8. An Air India spokesperson on Saturday said the B777-200LR aircraft, bearing registration mark VT-ALH, that was grounded in Magadan, Russia (GDX) following the diversion of AI173 DEL-SFO on June 6, has departed GDX and is on its way to Mumbai. EEL is a subsidiary of Solar Group of Industries, whose chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal apprised the CDS about the contribution of the group in development, manufacturing and supply of industrial and military explosives as well as other high energy materials. Since its entry into the manufacturing of defence systems in 2010, state-of-art facilities have been established at EEL for development, manufacturing and testing of modern grenades, mines, air bombs and a wide range of munitions, a release by Solar Industries said. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Odisha on June 17 and address a public meeting in Dhenkanal, a senior party leader said on Saturday. Odisha BJP general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan said Shah, during his one-day visit, will participate in the 'Maha Jansampark Abhiyan' of the party in Dhenkanal. The Himachal Pradesh government on Saturday said it has asked the Centre to fix a 40-year contract for the operation of hydropower plants and increase the state's share in electricity generated from such projects. Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union power minister R K Singh who visited Kinnaur district of the hill state recently. Sukhu urged the Union minister to fix a 40-year contract with the state government for various hydropower projects, including those of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) and Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), according to a statement issued here. Vedanta Ltd on Saturday said it has been declared as "preferred bidder" for an iron ore mine in Goa. The government of Goa had invited tenders to participate in electronic auction for grant of mining lease in respect of iron ore mines in the state, the company said in a regulatory statement. The company said it had submitted its bid for grant of mining lease. "As per the notice dated June 9, 2023, issued by the Directorate of Mines & Geology, Government of Goa, the company has been declared as 'preferred bidder' in respect of electronic auction of block VII - Cudnem mineral block based on highest final price offer of 93.15 per cent," it said. The grant lease by the Goa government shall be subject to making of necessary payments, completion of other terms and conditions of the tender document, Vedanta Ltd said. Iron ore is a key raw material used in steel manufacturing.

Delhi on Saturday recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8 degree Celsius, two notches above the season's average, the India Meteorological Department said. The minimum temperature settled one notch below normal at 26.7 degrees Celsius, it added. For Sunday, the weather office has predicted strong surface winds during the day time. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 43 and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively. The relative humidity oscillated between 38 and 49 per cent, the Met office said. At 7 pm, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the 'moderate' category with a reading of 140, according to Central Pollution Control Board data. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
